Geography: Ocean Currents

  • Ocean Currents emerge as a result of large scale movement of ocean water.
  • Types of Ocean Currents:
    • Warm Currents
      • Flow from equator toward poles.
      • Example- Gulf Stream
    • Cold Currents
      • Flow from poles towards equator
      • Example- Labrador Current
  • Causes of Ocean Currents:
    • Planetary winds
    • Earth's rotation (Corialis effect)
    • Differences in temperature & salinity
  • Important Ocean Currents:
    • Gulf Stream
    • Labrador Current
    • Kuroshio Current
    • Oyashio Current
    • Canary Current
    • Brazil Current
    • Benguela Current
    • Agulhas Current
    • West Australian Current
    • North Equatorial Current
    • South Equatorial Current
    • Peru (Humboldt Current)
    • California Current
    • East Australian Current

El Nino and La Nina
  • El Nino:
    • Warm Pacific waters shift eastward.
    • Causes droughts, floods globally.
  • La Nina:
    • Cooling of Pacific waters.
    • Often brings opposite effects to El Nino.
  • Impacts:
    • Monsoon patterns.
    • Marine ecosystems.
    • Global temperatures.
