BPSC Mains Syllabus (General Studies Paper-I)

Modern History of India and Indian Culture: Broad history of India from the mid-19th century with special reference to Bihar

  • Introduction and expansion of Western education (including technical education) in Bihar.
  • The role of Bihar in India's freedom struggle will be a major focus.
  • Specific movements and events in Bihar like the Santhal Uprisings, the 1857 rebellion, Birsa Movement, Champaran Satyagraha, and the Quit India Movement of 1942 will be covered.

Indian Art and Culture: Candidates are expected to have knowledge of the chief features of Mauryan and Pal Art, as well as Patna Kalam painting.

  • Contributions of key figures like Gandhi, Nehru, and Tagore.

Current Events of National and International Importance: This section will focus on significant current events both at the national and international levels.

Statistical Analysis, Graphs, and Diagrams: Candidates will be tested on their ability to draw logical conclusions from information presented in statistical, graphical, or diagrammatic forms.

BPSC Syllabus for 71st Prelims Exam

1. General Science

General understanding of science, including matters of everyday observation and experience. The questions on Science and Technology will be such that they do not require any subject specialisation.


2. Current Affairs

Current Affairs of National/International importance.


3. History

History of India and Bihar (General understanding of the subject with the broad aspects of the history of Bihar).


4. Geography

Geography of India and Bihar (Questions will relate to the physical, social and economic geography of the country including the main features of Indian agriculture and natural resources).


5. Polity

Indian Polity (Questions will test knowledge on the country's political system, Panchayati Raj, Community Development and Planning in India and Bihar)


6. Economy

Indian economy and economy of Bihar post-independence


7. Indian National Movement

Indian Movements and Contribution of Bihar in it (Questions will relate to the nature and character of the 19th century resurgence, growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence with special reference to Bihar)

Under the Indian National Movement, candidates have to focus on the resurgence in the 19th century, the nature and growth of nationalism in India, and India's independence. Also, the role of Bihar in the Indian National Movement is important from the BPSC examination point of view.

BPSC Exam Pattern

The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) Examination comprises of three stages:

1. Prelims: Objective type (Multiple Choice Questions)
There are 150 questions of General Studies subject. All questions are of objective type nature. Duration of exam is of two hours. For every wrong answer, there is provision of negative marking of 1/3 points.
Prelimiary  exam is only for the purpose of screening the candidate and meant to select the candidates for the Mains exam. Number of candidates selected for the Mains exam will be around 10 times of the number of notified vacancies.
Questions will be asked from General Science, Current Affairs of national and international importance, History of India and special features of the History of Bihar, Geography, Prominent Geographical sections of Bihar and important rivers, Indian Political and Economic System, Important changes in the economy of Bihar after post-independence period, National Movement of India and role of Bihar in the Indian National Movement and General Mental Ability.

2. Mains: Descriptive / Objective type
